瀘州位于四川省東南，東與重慶市和貴州省接壤，南與貴州省連界，西與云南省和四川省宜賓市、自貢市相連，北接四川省內江市和重慶市。

1983年3月3日，國務(wù)院批準成立省轄瀘州市，下轄市中區和瀘縣、納溪縣、合江縣。1985年6月4日，國務(wù)院決定將敘永縣、古藺縣劃歸瀘州市管轄。

1996年7月1日，瀘州市行政區劃調整，設江陽(yáng)區、龍馬潭區、納溪區和瀘縣、合江縣、敘永縣、古藺縣，市政府駐瀘州市江陽(yáng)區大山坪。全市轄區面積1.22萬(wàn)平方千米。

瀘州為川南要沖，巴蜀門(mén)戶(hù)，處于川、滇、黔、渝4省市結合部“金三角”地帶，地理上控扼兩江（長(cháng)江、沱江）、“兩河”（赤水河、永寧河），自古以來(lái)就為鎖鑰一方的關(guān)隘重地；依托其自然地理，瀘州人民繁衍生息2000多年，使瀘州成為國家版圖中兼具自然個(gè)性、文化個(gè)性地區。
